3D Virtual Reality Introduction

True Interactive 3D

Virtual display of a man's arm extending out of a computer screen.

Today, virtual environments are created with an X, Y, and Z axis. Most engineering computer aided design (CAD) software used today allows for the creation of 3D models however, they are traditionally viewed on a 2D display system (flat computer display). This environment is considered by many to be"2.5D." Examples include animated video and some website applications. 2.5 D is a great way to present new product concepts and test through broad mediums such as online surveys. Although the appearance does vary with some applications allowing the manipulation of camera angles, it is not considered "true 3D" because the environment is not interactive. True stereoscopic 3D is a visually enhanced viewing experience in which the viewer believes that they are seeing in three dimensions and not in two. True Interactive 3D (I3D) utilizes advanced software and display technology to create better modeling, quicker learning, and more impactful and immersive experiences.
